What Does a Root Canal Cost?
Root canal treatment addresses the inside of a tooth. A procedure-only quote may not include the final filling, core buildup or crown, so ask for the full diagnostic, treatment and restoration plan before comparing totals.
Price method, reviewed July 2026: Tooth Compass does not assign an unsupported national range to a root canal. Ask for the exact tooth number and procedure code, compare the insurer’s current pre-treatment estimate and use an independent ZIP-level reference such as FAIR Health Consumer.
| Quote component | What the estimate should identify |
|---|---|
| Front-tooth root canal | Tooth number, procedure code, provider and procedure-only fee |
| Premolar root canal | Tooth number, procedure code, provider and procedure-only fee |
| Molar root canal | Tooth number, procedure code, provider and procedure-only fee |
| Final restoration | Filling, buildup and crown as separate named lines when proposed |
The table is a budgeting framework, not a diagnosis or prediction. Tooth anatomy, clinical findings, prior treatment and the proposed restoration require professional assessment.
Procedure-Only Cost Versus Complete Tooth Plan
Ask whether the root canal estimate includes:
- examination and diagnostic imaging;
- endodontist consultation, if applicable;
- local anesthesia;
- root canal treatment for the named tooth;
- temporary restoration;
- permanent filling or core buildup;
- crown or other final restoration;
- laboratory work and placement;
- scheduled follow-up;
- any separate emergency, facility or specialist charge.
Do not compare a procedure-only number with a total that includes the final restoration. If a crown is proposed, the dental crown cost guide explains the material and scope questions to ask.
Why Tooth Type Appears on the Estimate
Front teeth, premolars and molars can appear as separate procedure categories on an estimate. Ask the provider to state the tooth number, proposed procedure code and services included. The quoted fee does not tell you whether treatment is needed or whether a general dentist or endodontist is appropriate for the case.
Retreatment and Previously Treated Teeth
If the tooth has had prior endodontic treatment, ask whether the estimate is for retreatment and whether removal of existing restorative materials is separate. The provider should explain the diagnosis, alternatives and complete restorative plan. This article does not estimate an individual retreatment.
What an Itemized Root Canal Estimate Should Show
Use one worksheet for every quote:
| Section | Information to record |
|---|---|
| Tooth and diagnosis | Tooth number, clinical finding and proposed code |
| Diagnostics | Examination, X-rays and any 3D imaging |
| Provider | General dentist or endodontist and license verification |
| Treatment | Procedure, anesthesia and temporary restoration |
| Final restoration | Filling, buildup, crown and laboratory work |
| Follow-up | Included review and who manages later concerns |
| Insurance | Allowed amount, estimated benefit and patient portion |
| Complete total | Included items, exclusions and change conditions |
Ask for the answer in writing when possible. If two plans differ, identify whether the difference is clinical scope, provider, restoration or insurance assumption before comparing price.
General Dentist and Endodontist Quotes
The provider’s title alone does not determine the complete cost or clinical suitability. Verify the active license and, when a specialist is presented as an endodontist, confirm the specialty through the relevant state or professional source.
Ask:
- Who will perform the root canal?
- Who will place the final restoration?
- Will the providers issue separate bills?
- Which diagnostic images are included?
- Which services could be added after treatment begins?
- Who handles an urgent concern after the appointment?
These questions reveal scope without making assumptions about how any office bills.
Insurance and Out-of-Pocket Planning
Request procedure codes for the root canal and every proposed restoration. Then ask the insurer for a written pre-treatment estimate showing:
- network status for each provider;
- submitted and allowed amounts;
- deductible and coinsurance;
- annual maximum remaining;
- waiting periods or exclusions;
- estimated patient responsibility.
Do not treat the estimate as guaranteed coverage. The final claim decision can depend on plan terms and submitted records. If financing is considered, compare the annual percentage rate, fees, deferred-interest rules and total repayment amount rather than the monthly payment alone.
When Price Comparison Should Not Delay Care
This guide cannot evaluate symptoms. Contact a licensed dental professional promptly for significant or worsening dental pain, swelling, fever, trauma or drainage. Seek urgent or emergency care for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or other severe symptoms.
If time allows, you can still request an itemized estimate and verify insurance, but a price comparison should not replace clinical triage.
Root Canal Cost FAQ
Does the root canal price include a crown?
Do not assume it does. The root canal, buildup and crown can be separate line items and may involve different providers. Request a complete tooth plan.
Why is a molar listed separately from a front tooth?
Fee schedules can use tooth-specific procedure categories. Ask for the tooth number, proposed code and included services; the category does not establish treatment need.
How do I compare root canal quotes?
Match the tooth, diagnostic work, provider, procedure, temporary restoration, final restoration and follow-up. Compare complete written totals only after the scope is equivalent.
Can insurance tell me my exact out-of-pocket cost?
An insurer can issue a pre-treatment estimate, but it is not a final claim determination. Check network status, allowed amount, deductible, coinsurance, exclusions and annual maximum.
What if I cannot afford the proposed treatment?
Tell the dental provider and ask about clinically appropriate alternatives, timing and written payment options. If financing is offered, review the total repayment terms. Do not delay urgent evaluation solely to compare prices.

Only a licensed dentist or endodontist who has evaluated the tooth can determine whether root canal treatment, a restoration or another option is appropriate.
